How to: Mens Facial Cleansers

Cleanliness is next to godliness, or so the saying goes. There is no doubt that using a good face wash is the first step to healthy skin.

A good face wash should have these characteristics: mild on the skin, a smooth texture, non-drying and should have gentle lathering properties (with the exception of cleansing milks).

Mens Facial cleansers on the market are varied and a mixed bag so to ensure when you are looking for a great face wash your needs are met here are some things to keep in mind:

1. After washing the face, the tight, squeaky-clean feel is not what we are looking for.

We are looking for it to feel soft. It is cleansing a lot of oil away so it may feel a bit dehydrated but what we definitely do not want is severe tightness.

2. If the skin feels tingly that’s fine, but make sure its not burning. If so, discontinue use. If you are prone to sensitivities apply the product on a patch of skin first (I recommend the inside of the wrist or under the chin) to check if you will react to the product.

3. Make sure you keep your skin type in mind before buying a face wash (see skin types). If your skin is dry go with a cleanser that is milky or oily and try to use one that is either activated dry (without using water) or turns into a very creamy lather. If you are oilier a gel cleanser is the ticket, but ensure it doesn’t dry your skin out too much either otherwise the cycle continues.

Use lukewarm water when applying a cleanser massage over the face before washing off. The shower is supposed to be a no-go place for using a face wash, but as long as you keep the temperature below boiling level you should be fine.

Some of my favourite face washes to try at home are:

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Face Wash: One of the New York cult brands top products, Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Face Wash has been an invigorating staple in gentlemen’s bathroom cabinets for years. Its refreshing mixture of menthol, camphor and lemon extracts with soothing Vitamin E make this one the best face wash after a night on the town.

L’Occitane Angelica Hydra Vital Cleansing Gel: L’Occitane’s Angelica range is a unisex range that helps with promoting hydration and this mild cleanser is a winner due to the super lathering potency, its lightweight formulation and its super cleansing without leaving the skin dry.

Face cleanserAesop Amazing Face Cleanser: In true Aesop style this is blissfully scented with some delicious citric and floral oils alongside invigorating sea salt. This one is a wake-up call for the senses and is suitable for men who are prone to a bit of oil in their skin.
